Thailand Introduces E-Visa System for Indian Citizens from January 2025
The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi will launch the Thai e-Visa online application system, significantly improving and simplifying the Thailand visa application process for travel categories such as Tourist, Business, and Official, starting January 1, 2025.
Shift to Digital Platforms
Applicants must submit their visa applications exclusively through the portal, thaievisa.go.th. Additionally, the system allows offline payment options, offering flexibility for users.
Under the current system, applications will be accepted until mid to late December 2024, depending on the type of passport. Ordinary passport holders can apply through designated visa processing companies until December 16, 2024, while diplomatic and official passport holders can apply directly to the Embassy or Consulate-Generals until December 24, 2024.
Key Features of the E-Visa System
- Self or Representative Applications: Individuals can apply personally or through authorized representatives. However, the Embassy clarified it is not responsible for incomplete applications submitted via representatives.
- Non-Refundable Visa Fees: Visa fees are non-refundable, and detailed payment instructions will be provided during the application process.
- Processing Time: E-visa applications will take approximately 14 working days from the issuance of the Visa Receipt.
Existing Visa Exemption Policy to Continue
Indian travelers with ordinary passports will retain the 60-day visa exemption for tourism and short business visits until further notice, ensuring uninterrupted travel during the transition.
Deepening India-Thailand Relations
This e-Visa rollout strengthens India-Thailand relations. Both nations, sharing a maritime boundary in the Andaman Sea, have cultivated profound social, cultural, and economic ties over centuries. Their shared Buddhist heritage fosters deep cultural connections, with Thai nationals frequently visiting India’s Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Similarly, Hindu influences in Thai art, architecture, and dance highlight this enduring cultural exchange. The Indian diaspora in Thailand further bolsters these bilateral ties.
What’s Next?
The Royal Thai Embassy will provide further updates on the e-Visa system’s operation through its Embassy and Consulate-Generals in India. This initiative reflects Thailand’s commitment to modernizing its administrative systems, making it easier for Indian travelers to explore the country’s rich heritage, culture, and attractions.
